"It is unfortunately not uncommon for marginalized people to respond to real tensions around issues like class and race by blaming another marginalized group rather than the structures of oppression themselves. Reactionary Black separatism should be understood as one of many diverse responses to white supremacy—one that tragically mirrors the ideology that it claims to fight. It is not a stand-in for all Black liberation movements, and it’s false and misleading to cast it as “left-wing.”

Here's an excerpt

"But Tiffany Haddish’s joyful bat mitzvah pictures are a reminder that life as a Black Jew isn’t just suffering and discrimination — it’s also pride, laughter, and a sense of community. Seeing Tiffany Haddish reading from the Torah at her bat mitzvah means seeing my own love for Jewish learning reflected back at me. Hearing her address being Black and Jewish in her new Netflix special Black Mitzvah means I get to laugh along with someone talking about my experience, rather than it being the butt of an outsider’s joke. There is something liberating in the normalcy of it all, and the way that her Jewishness is given public respect where many Black Jews have had ours questioned.”

I'll be focusing on how Palestinian, Israeli, and African Asylum Seeker communities respond to experiences of incarceration, and how these differing experiences fit into interlocking systems of state violence.
